For us 2010 had been a very special year, it was the nurseries 150th anniversary but tinged with sadness at the death of W Martin Robinson VMH. The nursery was started by our great grandfather in 1860, this makes the nursery 152yrs old. The site has remained the same but the old greenhouses have long gone. Both Margaret and I remember those. They were wooden, very low and with very small panes of glass, a nightmare in a wind. Some of the old buildings remain, they are built of river stones and cement and have stood the test of time.

During our 2011 show season we were pleased to meet many customers old and new to hear of your stories. There is always someone with a different tale to tell. We never tire of listening to these and look forward to more in 2012.

The harvest of the Mammoth Onions for 2011 had been better than ever this year. The heavy rain we have had has done some good after all. All seed is now harvested and cleaned ready for the year ahead.

The 2012 catalogue is now available. We have added several new items and we hope you will enjoy our choice of varieties.

For 2012 there is a new page on the web site. After listening to customers we have added a page called Vegetables for the Show Bench. This gives a mixture of all types of veg on one page. Whilst they are strong varieties for the show bench they are also good to eat. As we have said many times vegetables are of no use if they cannot be eaten. They have to taste as good as they look.

All the vegetable plants and seed we grow are grown using natural preditors for insect control. No chemical pesticides are used. This works extreemly well in spite of the very varied weather conditions.

The plants are grown using John Innes compost which is soil based, we do not use peat based compost for the propagation of our plants. All plants are traditionally grown in either 9cm pots or trays. We do not supply plug plants, that is plants grown in small peat pots. Our growing methods have remain unchanged for over 70yrs, as it works we do not intend to change. Whether the plants are supplied by mail order or collected from the nursery the plant grown under the same routine.

The seeds we supply are the same as we use ourselves for growing on the nursery. We know what is in each packet, giving us total control.
