A large stalky vegetable related to the Globe Artichoke. Popular in France, Italy and Spain. Less well known in the UK. Used in Victorian times as a vegetable, the stems are blanched to use, now mostly grown for its large leaves and artichoke like heads.

Perennial plant which needs a permanent site.  May be left to grow as a stunning plant in the herbaceous border will produce small globe artichoke like heads loved by the bees and butterflies.

25seeds sow from February to March
